  • Forklift Safety Is the First Lesson in Forklift Training

Forklift safety is a factor because forklift operation can be hazardous not only when being driven, but when making repairs or refueling. That is why forklift safety should be at the top of the list for any business where anyone operates a forklift , or works on a forklift . Practicing forklift safety training prevents serious, even fatal accidents.

As part of forklift safety, forklift operators and mechanics should be familiar with every aspect of the forklift he or she is in contact with. Some of the ways to practice forklifts afety include completing forklift safety training or forklift certification, and using forklifts afety checklists as part of the normal routine on every job site. forklift operators should check their industrial truck before every use, making sure that all attachments are secure and in the proper position. They should also make sure that unauthorized personnel are not on or near the forklift    and make sure the load is secure before transfer begins.

Practicing basic forklift safety means that the driver operates the truck very slowly and with extreme caution. forkliftsafety also requires that forklift operators pay close attention to load capacities and make sure the weight does not exceed the capacity of the forklift being operated. forklift operators should be prohibited from any horseplay or “stunt driving” at all times. The most fundamental component of forkliftsafety is that anyone operating a forklift takes it very seriously. forklifts afety requires the pallet to be fully lowered before any load engaging begins, and that every industrial truck should be powered off before leaving it unattended.

More forkliftsafety precautions include making sure the operator’s arms and legs are always inside the running lines of the forklift and that the operator remains seated at all times during operation. Additional forklifts afety practices include maintaining a safe distance from the edges of platforms or ramps while the operator is on an elevated platform or loading dock. In addition to practicing forklift safety during forklift operations, personnel making minor repairs or performing maintenance on an industrial truck need to be taught about basic forklift safety procedures. For example, when refueling a forklift , the engine should be turned off, and any spillage should be completely washed away or evaporated before restarting the forklift. forklifts afety also requires that operators refrain from smoking around forklift trucks, any leaks are immediately investigated and corrected, and no open flames should be used around a forklift .

Forklift safety technicians should conduct inspections and make repairs only in areas at the worksite designated for such purposes. Basic forklift safety practices should include immediately removing any forklift truck that emits sparks (or flames) from the exhaust system, and returning it to service only after the cause is found and repaired. The same forklift safety practice of immediate removal of the forklift truck from service would apply if the temperature of any part of the forklift truck exceeds its normal operating temperature.

Forklift safety helps forklift operators and repair technicians identify potential hazardous forklift equipment and working conditions, and prevent serious accidents. forklift safety checklists help site supervisors and employees follow fundamental safety practices and assess potential hazards, to reduce or eliminate accidents and injuries.
